Tuireann stood anxiously on the beach as the boat cleaved its way towards him. He could see no sign of his sons. The boat shot on to the sand and stopped. Tuireann ran to it and looked inside. His three sons lay motionless on the bottom, blood pouring from their wounds. A cry of anguish escaped from Tuireann’s lips.

Brian stirred and his eyes flickered open. ‘Go quickly, Father, and ask Lug to give you the golden apples. They will heal our wounds. Otherwise we shall die!’

Tuireann raced to his horse, leapt into the saddle and whipped the animal into a gallop. When he arrived at Lug’s fort, he ran to the door and pounded on it with his fists. The door swung open and Lug stood there with an evil smile on his face.

He listened while Tuireann pleaded for the golden apples, then he shook his head. ‘The death of your sons will please me more than all the magic treasures they brought me!’ he hissed. Then he slammed the door shut in Tuireann’s face.

Tuireann galloped to the boat. He leant over the side and Brian gazed up at him expectantly. But the hope died in his eyes when his father shook his head sadly.

‘Lug would not give me the magic apples,’ he said. ‘He wants you and your brothers to die.’

‘He will have his wish,’ Brian whispered and closed his eyes.
